چکیده

Multilayers with low charge density polyelectrolytes assembled on thin films of cellulose were studied by piezoelectric microgravimetry. The substrates were produced from colloidal suspensions of cotton fibers before and after modification with cationic and anionic groups via epoxy intermediates of quaternary ammonium and carboxymethylation, respectively. Two different levels of ionicity were used for each cellulosic substrate in order to investigate the role of the supporting surface in the buildup of the multilayer. It was found that while electrostatic interactions were leading factors in the assembly of high molecular weight, low charge density polyelectrolytes, other effects such as van der Waals and secondary cooperative forces played important roles. The charge properties of the substrate and the adsorbing polymer were relevant to the behavior of the self-assembled multilayers. Sequential additions of weak polyelectrolytes formed viscoelastic layers on all cellulose substrates. Adsorption of the first layer depended heavily on the charge characteristics of the substrate while the buildup of subsequent layers was mainly affected by the outermost adsorbed polymer. The polyelectrolyte multilayer formation with highest total adsorbed mass occurred on unmodified cellulose surfaces; therefore, in the case of the low charge density polyelectrolytes studied, substrate ionicity and functionalization may not be a requirement. Finally, the effect of anionic weak polyelectrolytes added after the first adsorbed polymer pair is highlighted in the context of reported observations for polyelectrolytes of high charge density. © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2011

Molecular dynamics simulations of electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly.

Electrostatic assembly of multilayered thin films through sequential adsorption of polyions in layer-by-layer fashion utilizes the strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged molecules. We perform molecular dynamics simulations of multilayers of flexible polyelectrolytes around a charged spherical particle. Our simulations establish that the charge reversal after each deposition ...

Steel Coated with Cationic Poly (Ethylenimine) (PEI) and Anionic Poly (Vinylsulfate) (PVS) Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Nanofilm with Different Benzotriazole Inhibitor Concentrations

Nano-films consisting of an alternating sequence of positively and negatively charged polyelectrolyteshave been prepared by means of the electrostatic layer-by-layer sequential assembly technique on mildsteels. The mild steels were pretreated electrochemically to modify the mild steel surface. The modificationof the mild steel surface resulted in increasing the adhesion of the obtained nano-fil...

Network formation of catanionic vesicles and oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. Effect of polymer charge density and hydrophobic modification.

In nonequimolar solutions of a cationic and an anionic surfactant, vesicles bearing a net charge can be spontaneously formed and apparently exist as thermodynamically stable aggregates. These vesicles can associate strongly with polymers in solution by means of hydrophobic and/or electrostatic interactions. In the current work, we have investigated the rheological and microstructural properties...

Multilayer Nano Films for Corrosion Control

Nano films consisting of an alternating sequence of positively and negatively charged polyelectrolytes have been prepared by means of the electrostatic layer-by-layer (LBL) sequential assembly technique on treated and untreated mild steel wires. Inhibitor was encapsulated between cationic and anionic polyelectrolyte nano films. This paper mainly focuses on the effect of these nano-films of poly...

Adsorption of Xylan onto Cellulose Fibers Pretreated with Cationic Polyelectrolyte and Its Effect on Paper Properties

Xylan is known as a strength-enhancing agent for paper. However, it is difficult to adsorb xylan onto cellulose fibers because it carries the same negative charge as fibers. Therefore, either cationization of xylan or addition of cationic polyelectrolyte is required to maximize the effect of xylan use. In this study, cationic polyelectrolyte was used to promote xylan adsorption onto cellulose f...
